Biology and behaviors of German cockroaches

Similar to American roaches, females of this species lay their eggs in oothecas, or protective capsules, that contain up to 40 eggs. Upon hatching, the nymphal stage begins. Nymphs do not have wings and molt five to six times before becoming adults.

German cockroaches are nocturnal and will emerge from hiding places after dark in order to find food.

Where are you likely to find German cockroaches indoors?

German cockroaches are mostly found in kitchens and bathrooms, where they have access to both food and water.

What do German cockroaches eat?

German cockroaches are omnivorous, eating a wide variety of human food as well as pet food. They also feed on leather, book bindings, dead insects and excrement.

Signs of a German cockroach infestation

While German cockroaches are primarily active at night, seeing one crawling across your kitchen floor or countertops during the day is a very good indication that you have a German cockroach problem. Other signs include:

  • Droppings that resemble ground pepper or coffee grounds
  • Dead cockroaches
  • Shed skins
  • An oily, musty smell

Are German cockroaches dangerous?

Although German cockroaches do not bite, they have the potential to carry and transmit viruses, bacteria, and parasites on their bodies. Salmonella (food poisoning), diarrhea, and dysentery are all serious health concerns associated with this pest. Also, their feces and shed skins may trigger allergic reactions and asthma attacks in some individuals.
